This section is by far the most significant. Kek and BRT within the Boundary Waters drastically increased the amount of miles of the NCT passing through Wilderness Areas. Since then I have backpacked the Kekekabic twice and the Border Route, Angleworm and Sioux-Hustler trails. The vastness of this historical wilderness comprises a land of forests, rivers, deep, clear lakes, wildlife, and unsurpassed natural beauty. I think my last canoe trip in the Boundary Waters was in 2002. When it comes to canoe wilderness, it is unmatched. Learn more about why it’s critical we protect the Boundary Waters from toxic mining. WASHINGTON The Biden administration on Thursday said it will establish a 20-year moratorium on mining upstream from Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) is a wilderness that stretches along northern Minnesota and southern Canada. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Quetico Provincial Park stretch for nearly 160 miles (258 km.) between Minnesota and Ontario. It also sits on the Mississippi Flyway, a regional bird-migration path, and is a hallowed destination for spotting birds like loons, wood warblers and hundreds of other species. There is magic in the feel of a paddle and the movement of a canoe, a magic compounded of distance, adventure, solitude and peace. To preserve the values you are travelling to experience, some regulations have been established. Read on to find commonly asked questions and answers regarding your trip to the BWCAW. Among others, the area supports wolves, moose and otters and boasts waters lively with pike, walleye and other fish. Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Regulations and Rules. Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is an 814,441-acre property located along the northern edge of Superior National Forest. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a landscape of lakes, rivers, red and white pine forests and other habitat- part of a 4 million-acre boreal forest ecosystem extending into Canada that provides a crucial safe haven and migration corridor for wildlife in the age of climate change. The area will now be protected from the toxic effects of mining, which could indefinitely threaten the food sources of Native American and low-income communities Late last month the International Dark Sky Association designated the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness as a dark sky sanctuary one of only 13 in the world. “ The movement to protect the Boundary Waters is truly a locally led initiative, and we are grateful for the thousands of Minnesotans who made their voices heard and said ‘no way’ to toxic mining at the doorstep of this national treasure.” The decision to keep mining away from the area for the next two decades “recognizes the importance of safeguarding the Boundary Waters from pollution associated with extractive development, mitigating the extinction crisis and helping to achieve the Biden administration’s America The Beautiful conservation goals,” said Jamie Williams, president of The Wilderness Society, in a statement.

As chronicled in the Montana Post’s successor, the Madisonian newspaper, Stonewall Hall - the de facto territorial capitol - was center stage for this contentious rivalry. In 1875, the rich gold deposits of Last Chance Gulch and Helena’s more centralized location within the region provided the final impetus to relocate the capital. Within a few years, during the perpetual race to the latest gold strike, Virginia City’s status as the territory’s capital and principal settlement was soon challenged by the upstart community of Helena. The site of numerous balls, festivals and austere occasions - including the 1865 Democratic Convention and sessions of the Territorial Legislature - the community was well-served by the building’s primary tenants, a popular first-floor saloon and a notorious second-floor billiard and gambling parlor known as the El Sol. Highway 287 - the prominent two-story masonry building was a major landmark within the rough-and-tumble mining camp. Constructed in 1864 along Virginia City’s then booming main thoroughfare - today’s U.S. Ironically, Stonewall Hall, a Bovey property, was not included in the original transfer due to a clerical error and ended up in the hands of a succession of private owners.īased on accounts from the Montana Post, Montana’s first newspaper, Stonewall Hall was a popular gathering place for the community during its boisterous gold rush days. Faced with the potential loss of the now-cherished Montana treasure, the Legislature agreed to purchase the entire collection of buildings and artifacts for $6.5 million. Over the course of 50 years, the Boveys created one of Montana’s premier heritage tourism experiences.īy the 1990s, burdened with increasing operating costs and a backlog of deferred maintenance, the entire Bovey operation was up for sale. Beginning in the 1940s, Charlie and Sue Bovey - and later their son, Ford - acquired and preserved more than 200 historic properties associated with the legendary Alder Gulch and the two major settlements that sprung up around the discovery of gold there in 1863. The Montana Legislature created the MHC in 1997 to manage numerous historic properties purchased from the Bovey family in Virginia City and nearby Nevada City. COURTESY OF THE MONTANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY Stonewall Hall, seen here in a circa 1885 photo, was one of the first stone buildings built in Virginia City and marked its transition from a camp to a town. “The MHC is excited to lead this significant restoration project, ensuring the Stonewall Hall building and its unique history live on for the appreciation of future generations of Montanans,” MHC Executive Director Elijah Allen told Montana Free Press. LaFever Trust donated the property to the Montana Heritage Commission (MHC), a state agency that set about raising funds for restoration. Until recently, the iconic property seemed destined for the dustbin of forgotten state history.īut after years of lobbying by community members and statewide preservationists, that changed in 2022 when the Neal C. The center of local activity during Virginia City’s short-lived stint as capital of the Montana Territory from 1865 until 1875, Stonewall Hall is set for a $2 million restoration beginning this summer. VIRGINIA CITY - Ignored for decades, in poor condition and generally considered a lost cause, one of Montana’s most significant historic buildings - Stonewall Hall in Virginia City - is being coaxed back to relevance. Project to rejuvenate Stonewall Hall, dilapidated and long ignored, will begin this summer. For instance, I did work in the commerce department at Microsoft, which is responsible for selling Microsoft proprietary licenses. □ The point is that exaggerating your impact is acceptable as long as it’s not a lie. For example, the first bullet point under Microsoft: “Led the design and development of multiple enterprise-level microservice applications, driving $35.3 billion of revenue every year.” First of all, if I were honestly the one responsible for driving billions of dollars every year, I wouldn’t be here. Of the 7 seconds, guess how many you’ve wasted by putting your experience at the bottom? □ Tip Number Six. What do you think is the number one thing that companies look for? Your education? Your GPA? No, it’s always the work experience. You’re not applying to a school you’re applying to a company. Even if you’re a student, put experience at the top if you have any internships or similar. One common mistake candidates make in their resumes is putting education first don’t do that, especially if you’re already active in the field. That’s like an Uber driver confessing he knows how to use Google Maps. Don’t put in obvious stuff like Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows or macOS, and Visual Studio Code you’re wasting precious space. I’m virtually replacing the professional summary with my skills because my techniques translate who I am much better than a simple goal. I like having Skills in the first section because it’s de facto a quick overview of my technical background. Again, learning more about you shouldn’t be difficult. Let them know that you are indeed a software engineer. If you’ve worked on personal projects, point them to where your source code is. Give them ways to find out more about who you are. The goal is to force the recruiters to navigate your profile longer. Let me repeat what I found from Google: “With such limited time, the first impression you make is critical.” Tip Number Three. If they spend 7 seconds on your resume, will they ever take a look at your second page? □ Do you now see the importance of including only the essential components on your resume? Your resume should be well-organized on a single page. You only have 7 seconds to convince them. Do you know, on average, how much time recruiters spend reviewing a resume? 7 seconds. Make a strong impression with a single page. Try your best to make your resume appear as impressive and impactful as possible. Be aggressive, and do not hold yourself back. If this isn’t the time to present everything you’ve got, then when is? Give them a reason to choose you over others. I’m not asking you to be cocky and arrogant, but there’s a difference between being confident and modest. When applying for a job, it’s not the time to be humble. I want you to remember this before we dissect my resume. People love modesty, but they do not hire it. Here are my ten tips on crafting an effective software engineering resume. □ I got offers from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and a few others with this resume.Īlright. I don’t recommend a dark-themed resume if you’re an entry-level engineer, but for me, it worked. I created a dark resume because I wanted mine to kind of stand out (?) and because I just love dark themes. I also have a special announcement regarding Springboard, including a $1,000 discount if you use the promo code PIRATEKING, but more on that later. That’s how I helped dozens of people get offers from companies like FAANG! Implementing my techniques into your resume will significantly increase traction from the recruiters. And because I’ve reviewed and edited countless resumes throughout the mentorship, I know precisely the common mistakes candidates often make. Just an FYI, I also used to work as a software engineering mentor at a few educational startups, including Springboard, for over a year. For that reason, I’ll share my ten tips on how to write an effective software engineering resume by using mine as an example. Creating a resume is not difficult, but you do need to incorporate the right strategy to craft an effective one. I’ve redesigned it a bit to fit into the context of this video, but it’s almost identical to the one I used to apply to Google and later receive that $360k offer. Today, I’m revealing the resume I used to apply and get offers from companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. The Triangle Mastercard and the Triangle World Elite Mastercard do not have an annual fee. Of all the use cases, this was the one where I could see myself using the drill every time it’s time to clean. I’ve never had an easier time scrubbing down my tub, clearing away mold and mildew from grout lines, and clearing the nooks and crannies around the fixtures. While I limited my focus primarily to the kitchen, the drill brush really won me over in the bathroom, and specifically the shower. The original brush did an excellent job removing crud from an unsealed tile seam at the back of my counter that thwarted all my previous cleaning efforts, and it was also the ideal shape for scrubbing the sink drain. Equipped with a mild abrasive cleaner like the Pink Stuff, the drill provides enough power and leverage to target grimy areas with precision. The best use for the drill brush is for getting at tile backsplashes, grout lines, and other hard-to-reach areas. The overall experience was a bit like running the kitchen through a car wash, and was highly satisfying. In this instance, I preferred the sponge attachment over the bristles, although both worked well to dispatch turmeric stains and stubborn grease spots around the stove. I won’t bust out the drill every time I wipe down the counter, but for a once in a while, comprehensive scrub down, the drill was made quick work of my butcher block island and countertops. If you’re using natural degunking methods, like making a mixture of baking soda and dish soap, the brush is excellent for working up a lather that you can use to cover everything you wish to clean. The wide brush is also great for scrubbing around wire grates and racks with ease. The drill provides extra reach and leverage in corners and areas where you might have a hard time exerting force with hands alone. For example, cleaning the inside of my oven it’s difficult to clean every surface without inserting your body in the oven, and scrubbing at carbonized messes at full strength is exhausting. The drill brush is most practical for heavy duty cleaning scenarios that require power rather than finesse. Every single feature that you have in Google Chrome is also available on the Brave Browser. Brave solved this problem by creating a fork of Chromium and enhancing it to a tee. While Chromium is fantastic, it is also not free of predatory trackers and proprietary code. Brave Browser and Google Chrome are both based on Chromium, which is a free and open-source browser built by Google. Brave Browser looks exactly like Google Chromeīrave Browser and Google Chrome are built on the same technology. In this write-up, I'll give you 12 reasons (+1 extra bonus reason for devs) why you as a Google Chrome user should switch to Brave Browser while losing nothing and gaining everything. Ask yourself this, what's their end goal here? Do you as a consumer, like to be exploited? Are you as a consumer, not afraid of the fact that every single movement of yours is recorded and then used against you? If yes, then you're already halfway there. Your mouse movements, your website history, your passwords, every single piece of information that constitutes your identity are then stolen and sold to profit off of you. Every single website query that you enter in the address bar of Google Chrome is sent to Google and yes, even the one that you're not searching for on Google explicitly. These browsers are constantly uploading every single bit of data identifier to their cloud servers which are then used to create a psychological profile about you and sell it to politicians, advertisers, and other companies. Trinity University, Dublin published a research paper that showed that Browsers like Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Yandex can be a privacy nightmare. Your browser is the primary window to the capaciousness of the internet and while you may not think of it as a creepy data-mining factory, that's exactly what has become of it. So for the internet to remain as it was meant to be, to be free and open to the expression of any kind from anyone, we must take the control back and that starts from our browser. I'm not saying these corporations are evil and you should be up and ready with your pitchforks but it's essential to understand how and why these corporations must be kept in check so that the immense power does not end up biting us back because "You give them an inch and they'll take a mile". Your data is an asset, and they already know what value it holds which is why you're seeing some of the richest corporations ever created in the history of mankind, mining and stealing every single bit of your data. It's not hard to see why you would want to protect your data. Facebook called these people 'persuadables', those who are naive or haven't formed their mindset rigidly and can be persuaded to think in a particular way with enough algorithm brainwashing. Numerous research papers have been published over the years that have concluded that the power of suggestion, even through lousy advertising, can be persuasive enough to make you think a certain way. Your data has value, maybe not to you but to those who understand how to manipulate it and when they do manipulate it that's when the reality starts to shift and you end up not controlling even your own thoughts. Your data is important, if you don't respect it, someone else will and we all know how well they do that. Now, I'm not here to give you conspiracy theories about monopolies and oppression and whatnot, instead, I'm going to focus on the objective truth, the facts we have at our hands.ĭata has been deemed as the world's most valuable resource, more valuable than oil by The Economist magazine and most people aren't even aware of how their data is fueling these monopolies and hurting the open nature of the internet. These mega-corporations control our online existence and as a result, it becomes utterly important to know what power we hold as a consumer. Facebook having a monopoly over the majority of social media traffic taking place on the internet and Google having a monopoly in the search engine and browser space has raised several questions about the openness of the internet. It's 2022 and the internet as a whole is changing faster than ever. In this case, I had mistaken my ticket reference consistently so as to incorrectly assign all my work references to this, presently unworked ticket. One of Jira’s convenient features is that it automatically joins valid ticket references to the tickets they are referencing. Each commit also had valid working notes with this, the wrong ticket, as the ticket reference. Sure enough, the branch had my ticket number on it and the description of the ticket I was actually working on. When my coworker alerted me to this, I went to the wrong ticket, which had no work performed on its behalf yet, and found this: The beginning of the problem is that while the work was valid, it was referenced to the wrong branch. Process Breakdown Identifying the Problem Any GIT compatible process can perform the same overall process. Note: this process is universal, the tool of choice I used when I did this was SourceTree. Renamed each commit on the new branch using interactive rebase to the correctly named branch references Pushed that change to origin by the same nameĬonfirmed the new branch had my code on it (check for silly mistakes)ĭeleted the wrongly named branch from origin (already changed in local from #1) This was still quite early in the process, so I decided to quickly relocate the branch and commit references from the ticket I was not working to the one I was. I had not merged in the work yet, so there was no harm to our environment branches nor the core master. One of my coworkers alerted me to my mistake when someone else tried to pick up the ticket that I was incorrectly cross-referencing in my work. I recently made the mistake of referencing the wrong ticket number from our ticket management system (we were using Jira) when I made the ticket and 3 commits to the feature. |
